Reflections

As 2009 draws to a close I am reminded of the traditions my family and I participated in to welcome in the New Year. On New Year’s Day we always had a big dinner with at least a dish of black-eyed peas (for health) and cabbage (for wealth) and discussed how we were going to carry out our New Year’s resolution. While I won’t be able to do this with my family this year, I will be celebrating my family’s traditions with my husband and friends in Missouri.

In 2010 my resolution will be to exercise more. Really, my resolution is a little more than just to exercise more, it is to exercise enough to complete a half-marathon in October 2010. I am not worried about completing the half-marathon within a certain time frame – all I want to do is FINISH it (without injuries!). I’m counting on you all to hold me accountable!

Activities

These are just a few of the activities that will occur the week of Sunday, January 3, 2010 – Saturday, January 9, 2010:

· Monday, January 4, 2010, students from Rockhurst High School will be here (and for the subsequent three weeks) to play cards, board games and the like with the residents in Valley View.

· Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 11am “Lunch with Nicki and Trish” will be in the Activity Room. Pizza, salad and beverages will be served to all in attendance. The cost is $5.00 per person. Please sign up on the Activity Room window if you are interested in having “Lunch with Nicki and Trish.”

In early to mid 2010, our wonderfully creative Activity Department will be planning and organizing a Talent Show for Valley View. The plans are to have as many residents, family members and associates as possible participate in the Talent Show. More information on the Talent Show will be coming soon, but until then, be thinking of what your talent will be for the talent show. (I’m really excited about this!)

Please send John some good news about you and your family by Thursday, January 7, 2010 so that it can appear in the February 2010 publication of the Village Voice. You may send him the information by:

2. Writing your information on paper and dropping it in the mailbox outside of 610

Resident Welcoming Committee

Good news! I have at least three people who have agreed to help with the Resident Welcoming Committee. I am currently designing the architecture of the Committee and will have the Committee operational by February 2010. Thank you to all of the residents who have agreed to help me with this Committee.

Weekly Thanks

From this point forward, at the end of every Friday Letter there will always be a short paragraph about the things I am thankful for in Valley View. For the premiere installment of “Weekly Thanks,” I would like to say how thankful I am to have such a wonderful group of housekeeping associates in Valley View. They really go above and beyond the things they are required to do, and almost all of the time they do it behind the scenes without you ever knowing it. I send a very special, heartfelt “thank you" to all of Housekeeping for always having a friendly smile, a warm hello, a genuine concern and care for the residents in Valley View, and especially for keeping a resident out of harm’s way this week.

Best wishes to you and your families for a safe, healthy and prosperous New Year,

Heather Scott

Administrator, Valley View at John Knox Village
